A Herbal Odyssey in the Himalayas
The foothills of the Himalayas are home to some of the world’s most precious medicinal plant species, many of which are becoming threatened as a result of over-exploitation.
This website tells the story of Biolaya, a small social enterprise in north west India that, between 2004 and 2012, researched and developed pioneering projects to help protect these rare and valuable plants.
Written in retrospect, the website is a personal account of the work we did and some of the lessons we learnt. It is written partly for myself – a final step on my own Biolaya journey – and partly in the hope that it will inspire and guide others who have chosen a similar path.
But most of all it is written to provide a voice for and raise awareness of Himalayan medicinal plants that, having provided healthcare and wellbeing to people for thousands of years, are now in urgent need of our attention and support.

A note on how to navigate the website
The website isn’t designed to be read in any particular order. There’s lots to read, so if you don’t have much time on your hands, make sure you see some of the slideshows, which are at the top of the sidebar on the right (or below if you’re on a mobile). If possible, best to use a computer – there are still a few issues with the mobile version.
